Ian specialises in construction law as an advocate in the Supreme Court and commercial arbitration proceedings across Australia, as an arbitrator in domestic and international commercial arbitrations, as a court-appointed referee in Supreme Court proceedings in New South Wales, and as a mediator of commercial and construction matters.
He was admitted to the Bar in NSW in 1983 and was appointed Senior Counsel NSW in 2004. He is Grade 1 Arbitrator, a fellow of IAMA and ACICA and an arbitration panel member of HKIAC, CIETAC and KLRCA. He was the National Vice President of IAMA from 2004- 2008.
He is a professorial fellow of Melbourne Law School and was Co-Director of Studies for the Construction Law Masters Program from 2000-2014. In 2016 he will teach “Advanced Construction Law” as part of that program, and the “The Practice of Commercial Arbitration” in the Commercial Dispute Resolution program.
He has co-authored with Matthew Bell Construction Law in Australia (3 edn 2011) and Understanding Australian Construction Contracts (2008) and has presented many papers on construction law and ADR in Australia and internationally.
Ian was the founding Chairman of the Society of Construction Law Australia. He is also the Chair of a committee appointed by Standards Australia to draft new General Conditions of Contract AS-11000 due for release in late 2015.
