As a barrister, John Dixon practiced widely in commercial areas of practice in all jurisdictions.

In addition to regularly appearing before the Federal and Supreme Courts, His Honour practised as a certified and experienced mediator and a certified arbitrator.

His Honour held the following positions: Treasurer (and Executive member) of the Commercial Bar Association (“CommBar”); Chairman of the Corporations and Securities Law Section of CommBar; Fellow (Certified Arbitrator) of the Australian Institute for Commercial Arbitration; Vice-President of the Australian Institute for Commercial Arbitration Inc.; Member Pro Bono Committee – Victorian Bar Council.

As a barrister, His Honour had a particular interest in investment law, and professional negligence, particularly of building professionals. As a barrister, His Honour was also experienced in computerised litigation, paperless courts and the conduct of large, complex proceedings involving teams. His Honour has published articles and delivered papers and seminars on commercial topics.

During his first decade at the Bar, His Honouir engaged in a significant criminal law practice.

His Honour was appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of Victoria on 14 September 2010.
